Silent Hunters of the Dark
(Hawaii) -- Have you ever wondered what happens to house cats that run away from home? Many of them become feral (wild) and in the case of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park pose perhaps the greatest threat to Hawaiis last remaining petrel (seabirds) population. The feral cats are far-ranging night hunters and difficult to catch. Petrels once were so numerous they darkened the sky, today only a few thousand of these seabirds survive in their traditional nesting range. The future of Hawaiian petrels may depend on the success of the parks efforts to trap predators and build predator-proof enclosures around nesting sites. According to park biologists, petrels formally nesting range was down to seas level but now is primarily 8000 and higher.
